At Camp Voyageur we do more than just wilderness trips. When campers are not on the trail they're playing sports all day long. This not only offers opportunities for new experiences and the learning of new sport skills, but also gets campers in shape for the trail. There is a large choice of camp activities each day that boys can choose from including: soccer, ultimate Frisbee, archery, volleyball, footballito (soccer with a smaller ball on a tennis court), basketball, swimming, sailing (on a variety of boats: Sunfish, Hobie-Cat, Trac 16, and several scows), water skiing, four square, sail-boarding, fishing, knee-boarding, inner-tubing and much more. The weather of the day will determine the activities we'll open. For example on a calm day we might opt to open water skiing or knee-boarding, as opposed to sailing. While the sports games can be competitive we promote participation and learning new skills over winning.
The in-camp day is divided up into three sports activity periods: morning, afternoon and evening. Counselors give some instruction at the beginning of each activity, but the remainder of time is reserved for play. We usually open three to four games each activity period. We often add new sports with new staff that come to camp. For example in 2003 we had a counselor from England who introduced cricket and rugby to CV. We've even had some counselors "invent" games that become a tradition like scrobnitz (a mixture of soccer, rugby, football and a little bit of Frisbee), which was initially played at CV in the 60's. At Voyageur campers are given a range of choice, and we tailor the activities to individual interests while encouraging boys to try new things. Camp is the perfect place to learn new sport skills, too. With our ratio of one counselor to four boys there is plenty of time and attention given to individualized instruction.
Our counselors are also athletes, and training and keeping in shape is important to them as well. There is often the "gentlemen's touring club" of campers and staff who get up early and run before breakfast, or during free time during the day. Our two program directors: LeRoy "Coach" Schoenfeld has coached collegiate sports in wrestling, football and swimming. Dave "Clarkie" Clark teaches high school and has coached basketball for over 20 years. Many of our staff are members of sports teams, clubs or intramurals in college and have extensive experience in teaching youth sports and skills.
Parents and coaches alike are frequently amazed and delighted at the good physical conditioning and overall health that can result after just four weeks at Voyageur.
